The PTPA are very excited to announce auditions for THE GREAT DETECTIVES ONE ACTS!
WHO
Auditions are open for performers of all experience levels ages 16+ (performers should be able to believably play characters who are 20+ years old - see character descriptions for more details)
DIRECTORS:Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Purloined Letter” - Ciarán BurkeArthur Conan Doyle’s “A Scandal in Bohemia” - Cole Hrusovsky *please note, this One Act has already been cast*Agatha Christie’s “The Thumb Mark of St. Peter” - Emily BabulaAgatha Christie’s “The Wasp’s Nest” - Cole Hrusovsky WHAT THE GREAT DETECTIVES is a night of one acts featuring the most famous detectives in literary history - Auguste Dupin, Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot, and Miss Marple - tackling classic cases adapted from short stories from the masters and madame of mystery - Edgar Allen Poe, Arthur Conan Doyle, and Agatha Christie!
Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Purloined Letter” (adapted by Robert Mason)The original “great detective” and direct influence on Arthur Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie, Edgar Allen Poe’s C. Auguste Dupin set the stage for all of detective fiction to follow! When a possibly scandalous letter is stolen from the Queen of France, the police suspect the Prime Minister to be the culprit. However, when searches of his house fail to produce any evidence, it is up to Detective Dupin -- the Sherlock Holmes of his day -- to save the reputation of the Queen. “The Purloined Letter” was originally published as a short story in 1844 and was the last of three detective stories Poe wrote involving Dupin.
Arthur Conan Doyle’s “A Scandal in Bohemia” (adapted by Bill Amos)Sherlock Holmes meets “*the* woman,” Irene Adler, in Doyle’s first short story featuring the world’s most famous consulting detective following his full-length adventures in “A Study in Scarlet” and “The Sign of Four”! A mysterious masked visitor to 221B Baker Street comes to Holmes with a problem - the future King of Bohemia is preparing to marry a Scandinavian princess, but an intimate photograph with major potential to derail the upcoming nuptials is in the possession of his former lover - can Holmes use his powers of deduction and disguise to retrieve the picture before it can create an international incident?
Agatha Christie’s “The Thumb Mark of St. Peter” (adapted by Miles Ledoux)Miss Marple’s first mystery! Mabel, a niece of Miss Marple, is accused of the murder of her violent husband, whose family has a history of insanity. When arsenic is found in the house Mabel claims to have been intended to commit suicide, but who is telling the truth? Miss Jane Marple is on the case, thus beginning her path to becoming literature's most charming amateur sleuth. Originally published in 1928, it was later included in Christie’s short story collection The Thirteen Problems in 1932.
Agatha Christie’s “The Wasp’s Nest”This classic Christie short mystery sees the famous Belgian detective Hercule Poirot come between a bitter triangle of lovers and use his “little grey cells” in an attempt to prevent a sinister murder before it can occur. Originally presented as a teleplay aired on the BBC in 1937, it was the first ever on-screen appearance of Poirot.

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:
*Auditionees will perform cold reads from the scripts of the detective One Acts of their choice, in addition auditionees are requested to perform a short (45-60 second) dramatic monologue of their choosing. Monologues are not required but recommended, especially for video auditionees.*Auditionees can also indicate if they are willing to be cast in more than one One Act if requested.*Those participating will be provided with an audition form to complete upon entering the theatre. Please have a list of rehearsal conflicts that you are aware of between auditions and September 26 ready to be submitted. There will be a mandatory tech week of rehearsals from September 27-30.*Video submissions will be accepted until August 20 at 11:59 PM. Anyone interested in completing a video audition should email artisticdirector@ptpashows.org and an audition form will be sent. Upon completion of the form, appropriate audition sides will be forwarded for recording.

EDGAR ALLEN POE’S “THE PURLOINED LETTER”
DUPIN (male presenting, 30s-60s) - the precursor to Sherlock Holmes. He’s a middle-aged, neatly-dressed detective.
DAIGNAULT (male presenting, mid-50s) - a long-time friend of Dupin.
PREFECT (male presenting, 20s-60s) - the chief of the Parisian Police. A self-important bumbler. He wears the uniform of an early 19th century police captain, complete with conspicuous medals.
HER HIGHNESS (female presenting, early 30s, no lines) - effortlessly pretty, casual, and not expecting company.
HIS HIGHNESS (male presenting, middle-aged, no lines) - distinguished in appearance.
PRIME MINISTER (male presenting, middle-aged, no lines) - pantomimes deference but has ulterior motives

MISS JANE MARPLE (female presenting, 70s) - a sharp, no-nonsense old lady who is an expert on human nature
MABEL DENMAN (female presenting, early 30s) - Miss Marple’s niece who has been in an abusive marriage for 10 years. She is sometimes hysterical and overdramatic.
NICHOLAS DENMAN (male presenting, 70s) Mabel’s father-in-law who is very handsome for his age but has failing mental acuity
NURSE BREWSTER (female presenting, middle-aged) caretaker for Nicholas; she is gaunt, professional, and a little too perfect
COOK (female presenting, middle-aged) - the kindly cook for the Denmans
DR. GREY (male presenting, middle-aged) - a pathologist who avoids drama if he can
